Niko Malzic was the only son of Sil Malzic, one of the last survivors of the original Mandalorians and the man that would raise Niko to be a Mandalorian. Sil had been wounded in a battle previous to the Battle of Galidraan and so he was not able to participate. When the Mandalorians were all but destroyed there by the Jedi, Sil fled to Mandalore. He never forgave himself for not being at the battle, wishing he had been there to die fighting. A frequent drinker, Sil Malzic took his sadness and anger out on Niko, sometimes violently. Sil would die when Niko was 13.
During his childhood, Niko Malzic would be influenced by his father's crazed dreams of the return of the Mandalorians to glory. This dream seemed to come true during the Mandalorian Revolution, the successful war the Mandalorians launched to gain independence from the Zann Consortium. Even in his first experiences of combat, Malzic's comrades described him as a brutal, almost cruel man, showing no mercy to his enemies. This would only worsen as Malzic's position rose within the Mandalorian ranks.
Malzic long dreamed of giving power to the Mandalorians, with him as their Mandalore, conquering the galaxy. He was given an opportunity during the war between the Core Alliance and the Movement for Radical Change (MRC). The Mandalorians had found themselves on the losing side of this war as mercenaries for the MRC, a rebel group that viewed the Core Alliance as corrupt. When the MRC was defeated, the Mandalorians launched a preemptive strike on the Core Alliance capital of Kuat, fearing retaliation. The attack failed and the Mandalorians lost a good portion of their fleet. Knowing that an invasion of Mandalore would be inevitable, the Mandalorians fled their capital. Taking advantage of the confusion, Malzic launched a successful coup against Mandalorian president Gyvis and supreme commander Karvic, establishing himself as emperor of the Mandalorians.
The next few months were marked by a blindingly quick expansion of the Mandalorian Empire, an expansion that wasn't slowed even by a failed assassination attempt on Malzic by several Mandalorian high commanders that left him blind in one eye. This expansion ended almost as quickly as it started, when the Mandalorians stole prototype WMDs from the ESS. When Emperor of the Seven Suns Vince Trageton tried to talk Malzic out of conflict using diplomacy, Malzic declared war. This would prove to be extremely unwise, as Malzic would find himself up against the ESS, the allies of the ESS, the New Republic, and Mandalorian rebels opposed to Malzic's rule.
Soon enough, the Mandalorian Empire had all but crumbled. An invasion of Mandalore was launched by the ESS and its allies. Knowing all was lost, Malzic attempted to flee in his ship the Brutus. Unfortunately, he hadn't accounted for the bravery of Xiana Fett, the leader of the Mandalorian rebels. Fett boarded Malzic's ship and singlehandedly took him on in a fight that ended with Mazic being sucked into space.
Malzic survived even this. He was recovered and restored to life by the Vipers, who planned on selling him to the highest bidder. However, Lannarik Tyvis, a Mandalorian high commander who had defected to the Empire, stole Malzic during a deal with the Vipers. Malzic would spend the next months in a secret Imperial facility being brainwashed to once again be the “Emperor” of the Mandalorians.
This plan backfired on Tyvis during the second invasion of Mandalore when Malzic broke his programming and turned on Tyvis. It had turned out that Tyvis's Mandalorians still had more loyalty to their Emperor than to their commander, despite the fact that Tyvis had intented for Malzic to be little more than a figurehead. Tyvis's Imperial allies quickly caught on and opened fire on Malzic and his Mandalorians. In a last stand, Malzic crashed the Mandalorian flagship into an Imperial Star Destroyer, the warrior's death he would have always wanted.
