Born in 30BBY on Corulag, Darv Gyttel was exposed to the teachings of the Empire from a young age, and seemed to be always destined for a life of service. His father worked for the local civilian government, and his mother was a doctor in Corulag’s prestigious Academy. An intelligent man, Gyttel nonetheless enlisted as soon as he was able, unwilling to ‘waste time’ at the Academy to become an officer. Instead, Gyttel was made a Sergeant in the Stormtrooper Corps, his superb combat performance overcoming his lesser indoctrination evaluation scores.

Gyttel’s commander recognised that Gyttel was too highly skilled and intelligent for his rank, and thus did not have him subjected to the intense psychological conditioning required of stormtroopers, foreseeing his intelligence and independence would serve him better as an officer later in his career.

Upon completion of his first three years as a stormtrooper in 9BBY, having already seen considerable action against various pirate, terrorist and insurrectionist groups, Gyttel decided he wanted a change of scenery and applied to join a Scout Trooper division. Though his platoon lieutenant was unwilling to lose a competent and dependable sergeant like Gyttel, his familiarity with speeder bikes from his youth, and the general opinion that Gyttel was destined for better things than being a simple stomtrooper lead him to comply, and Gyttel was transferred.

After several months retraining, Gyttel was assigned to Raspher, a planet the Empire viewed to be too loose with its laws. The barren flats, towering cliffs and dense woods that formed most of the planets unsettled terrain allowed Gyttel to revel in his new freedom and independence. Gyttel found himself suited to his new mission profile, and he quickly adapted to the variety of tasks he was ordered to perform. From observations one day, to assassinations the next and rapid speeder bike interceptions to break the tedium, Gyttel excelled in everything, and five years later, his superiors came to the conclusion that he should finally be trained as an officer.

A year later, Gyttel was a lieutenant in charge of a light mechanised platoon, attached now to a naval task group patrolling a quiet sector for pirate activity. Though he himself remained in effect a Scout Trooper, he was now in command of squads of AT-PT walkers, adding a different dimension to the combat he was used to. Despite his many successes against pirate bases in the sector, however, Gyttel’s time in the platoon would be a short one. His actions during the year and a half had attracted the attention of Storm Commando Captain Varill Tarson, who selected the young officer for training.

Thrilled at the prospect, Gyttel accepted, and by 1BBY had passed his training and evaluation, and given command of his own four man squad. Under his leadership, Omicron Squad became a formidable counter-terror and insertion squad, specialising in neutralising threats from behind enemy lines. His new command and privileges gave Gyttel access to a wealth of classified and historical data, and he spent many hours of his down time researching the Clone Commando Squads that had operated in the Clone Wars.

Two years into his latest assignment, having experienced the rage of seeing the Alliance’s victory at Yavin, Omicron Squad’s assignments was changed, and he found himself attached to a mobile Naval Fleet, rather than the static garrisons he was used to. Though he had served on space vessels before, as a Scout Trooper, his role as a commando was suddenly changed. Gyttel found himself having to train in orbital insertions, boarding actions, hostage rescue in the tight confines of a freighter, and even piloting the commando exclusive TIE Hunter (something that Gyttel was never entirely comfortable with). Nonetheless, Gyttel stuck at it, and excelled in his new role as he had all through his career.

Not long after Hoth, Gyttel was assigned to a group under the command of one Captain Pitto, a posting he remained in during the Battle of Endor. Though he came up with an ambitious plan to capture a rebel capital ship during the course of the battle, Gyttel’s plans were cut short by the sudden destruction of the Second Death Star, the death of Emperor Palpatine, and the sudden collapse of the Imperial Fleet. Injured when Pitto’s command ship sustained heavy damage, Gyttel nonetheless participated in the retaliatory strikes that were to follow.

Gyttel stayed under Pitto following the latter’s promotion to Vice-Admiral, and was with him for the mission into the Unknown Regions. Gyttel was pivotal in the capture of the Vengeance-class Battlcruiser Hunter, during the Battle of Remora. He and his commando squad were the main part of a bold plan to take the ship, in which they were inserted directly into the warship’s bridge thanks largely to the piloting abilities of one Mryna Qhalic, a member of a mysterious organisation that Pitto had made a temporary alliance with. Once they secured the bridge, Gyttel and his man depressurised the entirety of the rest of the ship, venting its atmosphere into space and killing most of the crew. Those that remained were mopped up by conventional troops who boarded the ship, along with the technicians needed to get it moving again, when Pitto’s command ship docked with it.

Following his success, Gyttel was finally promoted to Captain, a move that had been on the cards for quite some time. As Pitto settled in to await the completion of his new command ship’s refit, Gyttel was assigned to a weapons research facility under the command of Moff Hallux, where he and his squad were responsible for base security. Unfortunately, a rebel attack while Pitto’s fleet were elsewhere lead to a pitched battle in the nearby city, and Gyttel found himself having to make some strange alliances after an enigmatic and dangerous race known as The Keepers arrived. While leading his former enemies to an emergency escape route, Gyttel was short and severely injured by a downed rebel pilot.

The ragtag band was able to escape, and Gyttel was taken to Bastion, the Empire’s capital after the fall of Coruscant, via a swift stopover at Nar Shaddaa, and given medical treatment. His injuries, however, prevented his return to action for over a year, during which time he was assigned to Imperial Intelligence, aboard the Lancer Frigate Eagle Eye One. Here, Gyttel was forced to relearn his trade once again, and took to training an Intelligence operative unit while Omicron Squad was placed in the capable hands of Gyttel’s friend and former mentor, the ageing but still deadly Captain (now Major) Tarson.

His time aboard Eagle Eye One was cut short during an operation over Nar Shaddaa, during which the return of the mysterious organisations Gyttel’s former commander Marcus Pitto had once made an alliance with lead to a pitched battle, and a standoff in the Bermuda Passage. His role as an Intelligence operative suddenly cut short, Gyttel returned to Pitto’s task group and resumed command of Omicron squad, allowing Tarson to finally retire.
